Few things will elicit an eye roll quicker than the words ‘thread count’. In fact, there is so much ado about thread count that its discussion has also become trite.
We are here to tell you that there is more to luxury linen than the Thread Count Numbers Game. While thread count has its place, it’s not the most important consideration for one’s bed linen.
When it comes to your bed linen, your focus should be quality of the threads, not quantity. A 400 thread count of short-staple cotton will not feel as glorious as 400 thread count of 100% Giza Egyptian cotton which is naturally long-staple.
Another important issue is the weave. You want a breathable weave to ensure just the right air flow to make sure your sleep is uninterrupted by temperature fluctuations.
The Numbers Game
Thread count refers to the number of threads per square inch, both vertically and horizontally. So 200 vertically (the warp) plus 200 horizontally (the weft) makes up your 400 thread count. The lower the number, the more open the weave. The higher the number, the tighter the weave.
An overly high thread count of good quality cotton may feel soft, but the fabric’s breathability is greatly compromised. Expect a toasty night.
Because of the popularity of high thread counts, unscrupulous manufacturers will use thinner or one-ply threads to deceive the consumer. These sheets will quickly pill, the fibres breaking easily. https://www.ftc.gov/sites/default/files/documents/advisory_opinions/national-textile-association/natltextileassn.pdf
The Weave
What you want in a bed linen is a durable weave of excellent cotton that allows the perfect amount of air flow to keep your body at an optimal and consistent temperature right to attain a good night’s sleep. No more tossing and turning with fluctuating body temperature. While some manufacturers will offer a high-thread-count sheet in a smooth sateen weave, the more durable and breathable weave for bed linen is a percale weave.
So while thread count is a factor, the focus should be on a quality long-staple fibre and the right weave.
In short? Count sheep, not threads.
But if you’re wrapped in our luxurious 100% Giza Egyptian cotton, we’re confident you won’t have to count too high.
